Pulling Strength from the Sea of Flowers: Three Spring Festivals Ignite the Tug-of-War Craze in Gangcheng
As spring breezes bring lush greenery and the scent of blossoms, a series of events under the “Fruity Fragrance of Springs” — the 2nd Jinan Specialty Fruit Carnival — has recently taken place across Yanzhuang, Xinzhuang, and Wenyuan subdistricts in Gangcheng. The highlight across all three festivals? A wildly popular, fun-filled tug-of-war that drew huge crowds and carried forward last year’s viral “village tug-of-war” phenomenon.
At the 4th Pear Blossom Festival in Yanzhuang, the “Fun Tug-of-War in the Orchard” became the undisputed crowd favorite. Surrounded by snow-white pear blossoms, participants gripped thick ropes and pulled in unison, with cheers and laughter echoing through the orchard. Hanfu enthusiasts even joined in dressed as “ancient strongmen,” adding a playful cultural twist. Many visitors came specifically to experience the buzz of Gangcheng’s signature “village tug-of-war.”

During the “Begonia in Bloom” event in Xinzhuang, a 100-person tug-of-war competition pushed the atmosphere to its peak. In the Jimu Mountain Begonia Garden, two thick ropes quickly drew massive crowds. Within minutes, two teams of 50 were formed. Chanting in rhythm, feet braced against the ground, bodies leaning back in unison, participants showcased the raw power and teamwork that define the spirit of “one rope, one heart.”
At the Peach Blossom Food and Flower Festival in Wenyuan, a two-person tug-of-war format proved just as lively. Visitors paired up to test their strength, building connections through laughter and friendly competition. Combined with flower viewing and local cuisine, the events used blossoms as a backdrop and tug-of-war as a bond, energizing the integration of agriculture, culture, and tourism.
Last year, Gangcheng’s inaugural “village tug-of-war” competition went viral, attracting 191 teams and 2,865 participants, with over 200,000 on-site spectators. Online, the livestream drew 1.5 million views, while short videos surpassed 11 million views. The event was even featured across three CCTV programs. A single rope sparked citywide enthusiasm, boosting rural tourism and local consumption.

This spring, the continued popularity of tug-of-war shows that the spirit of “village tug-of-war” has taken root, becoming a distinctive cultural identity for Gangcheng.
The rising wave of spring tug-of-war events has reignited public passion. Every cheer carries the energy of unity, and every pull reflects the determination of the people. The momentum is already building for the 2026 edition of the competition.
Today, “village tug-of-war” has grown beyond a simple sport. It has become a platform for community bonding, rural revitalization, and cultural expression — a festival embraced and celebrated by all. Many locals are already looking forward to this year’s competition, eager to form teams and cheer for their hometown.
The excitement continues this year — bigger, stronger, and more spirited than ever. Residents and visitors alike are invited to join, bring friends and family, and be part of this citywide celebration. Feel the power of unity, share the joy of competition, and cheer together for Gangcheng’s vibrant future.
